A BARNSLEY MP has called for the so-called 'bedroom tax' to be scrapped by Christmas.
Michael Dugher's latest call for action follows a parliamentary question tabled by the Barnsley East MP which revealed almost 1,500 have been hit by the tax in his constituency alone.
Each of these have been forced to find on average an extra £700 a year. In the wider region, over 16,500 people in South Yorkshire have been affected.
Michael said: "Nearly 1,500 people in Barnsley East alone will struggle to make ends meet this Christmas, many relying on food banks to survive.
"The tax is wasting people's money, time and talents. We need to scrap this once and for all. It should be scrapped immediately."
