THE council has responded to businesses after claims that the ongoing resurfacing work in the town centre has had a knock-on effect on their trade.

Some business owners in the town centre have been taking to social media to vent their anger that the roadworks are putting customers off.

Coun Roy Miller, cabinet spokesperson for place, said: "Construction works to resurface Regent Street South started in November and they're on track to be completed in February 2015.

"Apart from a small area of work on Eldon Street, at the bottom of Regent Street South, there has been no work in front of the shops. Access to the shops will be maintained as the construction works expand.

"Before works started, ‘businesses open as usual’ signs were placed at the top and bottom of Regent Street South."
