THE new Tesco superstore in Barnsley is doing its bit for the town's less fortunate with an in-house food bank collection point.

Michael Dugher, MP for Barnsley East, visited the store in Hoyland to show his support for the scheme.

Mr Dugher was shown how staff and volunteers ask customers to buy extra food items that they can donate on the way out of the store. The retail giant then tops up all donations by 30 per cent.

He said: "I wanted to go to Hoyland's Tesco to show my support for the staff and food bank volunteers who do a brilliant job.

"It's a scandal that so many people are forced to rely on food banks, but the local community in Barnsley responded with their characteristic generosity."
