A WARNING has been issued urging Christmas revellers not to use unlicensed taxis over the festive period.

Council officers says these vehicles will not be insured to carry paying passengers and have not been examined to ensure they're roadworthy.

All licensed drivers undergo a rigorous application process which includes a criminal records check to ensure that they're fit and proper to hold a licence with the council.

All drivers will have and be able to produce a driver licence ID card containing the council's logo, a photograph and the driver's licence number and expiry date.

Coun Charlie Wraith, chairman of the council’s general licensing board, said: "I dread to think of the consequences should an unlicensed vehicle be involved in a serious road traffic accident.

"The council will be providing taxi marshals for the rank on Midland Street and Eldon Street for the busiest nights to ensure the public can hire taxis safely."
