RESIDENTS have been left shocked at council proposals to create a gypsy site in Carlton.
The site, off Fish Dam Lane, is currently used for livestock but could soon be home to 17 gypsy pitches.
The development forms part of the blueprint for Barnsley's local plan, which decides planning policy for the area up to 2033.
The local plan also identifies areas suitable for gypsy and traveller sites - one of which is off Fish Dam Lane.
Sharon Gibson, of Wharncliffe Street, said she and many others who live in the area only found out about the proposed changes a couple of days ago - and had heard nothing about a council meeting at Carlton Community College last Tuesday.
The 35-year-old said: "Luckily we all passed the message on to each other about the meeting, otherwise none of us would have known about it.
"The council are showing no thought for anyone else. Of course the plans will go ahead because they don't listen to what people want."
Resident Thelma McLoughlin said: "I am an 81-year-old woman and I live by myself, I don't want to be worrying about who's hanging around near my house.
"It's also worrying to think about the state they're going to leave the field in."
