UWE Rosler has been installed as the favourite to become Danny Wilson's successor following the latter's dismissal on Thursday.
Wilson - whose second spell in charge lasted 14 months - was relieved of his duties having overseen an inconsistent League One campaign so far.
The Reds sit in 17th position with a 35-point haul from 29 games, leaving the club seven points off the drop zone and seven away from the play-off places.
With upcoming games against close-by rivals in the form of Crawley, Crewe, Scunthorpe and Gillingham, February is set to be a pivotal month in Barnsley's topsy-turvy season.
The club, who also dismissed Wilson's assistant, Chris Hutchings, said: "Danny will always be welcome at Oakwell - the success he brought during his initial period with the club is unrivalled.
"However, recent performances and results have been concerning, considering the club currently boasts the fifth highest wage bill in League One.
"Whilst the club acknowledges there's been a large turnover of players, the position is still unacceptable."
Former Wigan boss Uwe Rosler has been installed as the favourite in the race to become Wilson's successor, with ex-Red Craig Hignett, Nigel Adkins and Gary Johnson also in the running.

David Symons said: "It's a results-based business. Let's face it, the results and performances have been woeful."
David Sutton: "This is Barnsley's problem - they don't keep a manager for two seconds. How's the team supposed to get used to the way the manager wants them to play?"
Darren Parkes: "What a ridiculous move. Danny was about the best level of manager that we could attract. No money, no future."
Paul Sheppard: "Wait… what? Last time I looked at the table there was only 11 points separating the play-offs from the relegation zone."
Adrian Firth: "Well done to Danny, I hope he finds a club that supports him. I feel sorry for the next manager that comes to Oakwell. It's a managers' graveyard."
