A VILLAGE in Barnsley had its first ever Christmas lights switched on last week.
Scores of people attended the event at Barugh Green Primary School last Thursday to see the lighting up a 16ft Christmas tree - the first tree in the school’s history - as well as festive lights on 17 street lamp posts in the village.
It's the first time in its history that Barugh Green has had its own festive lights.
Local businessman Eddie Riby donated over £5,000 worth of lights and teamed up with local councillors Alice Cave, Linda Burgess and Sharon Howard to make it happen.
Eddie, who has lived in the local area all of his life and also attended the primary school, said: "The evening was a huge success and I'm absolutely thrilled for the people of Barugh Green.
"It’s hard to believe now that it all began with a simple email to the council several months ago with the offer of some Christmas lights.
"Seeing everyone's smiling faces and the excitement of the children made me feel incredibly proud."
