AROUND 9,000 people attended this year's Christmas lights switch-on event in the town centre.

People of all ages enjoyed entertainment from Dearne FM and host Stephanie Hirst. Local indie rock band 404 got the crowd warmed up with a selection of songs including their own music and a number of popular covers.

Everyone joined in with the Frozen tribute characters’ singalong, Noddy got a huge cheer and there was also a surprise performance from Rough Copy, a crowd favourite from The X Factor.

After a countdown from the crowd, the streets were illuminated with beautiful Christmas lights, including those on the trees outside the town hall.

This was followed by a breathtaking firework display, set to music.

Mayor of Barnsley Coun Tim Shepherd said: "Thank you to everyone who came along and made this such an amazing night. It was an honour to switch on the lights."
