PLANS to build a nine-screen cinema and six restaurants at the Alhambra have been given the green light by the council.
The development will create up to 230 jobs - 60 at the cinema, 160 in the restaurants and ten in security and maintenance.
The extension will be built on top of the existing roof structure.
The multi-million pound investment, made by landlords F&C Reit, is expected to start in April 2015.
Spencer Gower, from F&C Reit, said: "It will bring a much-needed leisure hub to Barnsley and confirms our belief and commitment to the town centre.
"We want to make it a destination that brings people in from the surrounding areas which will also benefit the local economy."
