THOUSANDS of people are expected to watch Barnsley's Christmas lights being switched on tomorrow.

The popular event - which starts at 5pm outside the town hall - will have musical entertainment from Dearne FM and local four-piece indie-rock boy band 404.

A Frozen sing-a-long tribute starts at 5.15pm.

Noddy will be making his first appearance at 5.50pm to get everyone in the mood for the big switch-on, before he's joined by mayor Coun Tim Shepherd and compere Stephanie Hirst to illuminate the town centre at 6pm.

A firework display will then take place from the town hall's roof. The best area to get a good viewing point will be from the area outside Walkabout.

The event calls for road closures to be in place from 10am to 10pm and vehicle users are asked to note that between these times the following roads will be affected.

Church Street (from Eastgate to Shambles Street), Sadler Gate (full length), St Mary's Gate (full length). A diversion will be in place along Old Mill Lane, Harborough Hill Road, Westway and Shambles Street.

Kendray Street (from Midland Street to Eldon Street), Eldon Street (full length) and Market Hill (full length) will also be closed between 4pm and 6.15pm.

Shambles Street will be closed from 5.55pm to 6.05pm as the firework display takes place.
