HUNDREDS gathered to watch the official opening of the town's open market last week.
The market will trade from 40 stalls throughout Cheapside, May Day Green, Queen Street and Peel Square in the town centre.
Open from 9am to 4.30pm, shoppers will find everything from CDs and DVDs to gold and jewellery.
The move will allow work to begin to transform the old open market area and elsewhere before the market is moved back in two to three years.
"This has been incredibly well received by customers and traders alike and we are really pleased about that," said council leader Sir Steve Houghton.
He then invited Coun Roy Miller to ring the original market bell to declare the new market open.
