BARNSLEY town hall was evacuated after an anonymous caller phoned in a bomb threat.

The incident occurred on Monday morning at 8am and staff evacuated the town hall after seeking police advice.

Police officers closed the area around the town hall while carrying out investigations but staff were allowed back in the building shortly after.

A police spokesman said: "Barnsley Town Hall, currently under renovation, was evacuated just before 8am today after a reported bomb threat that turned out to be a hoax.

"Twenty-five workmen were asked to leave the premises while police and the site foreman checked the area. The closure lasted around two hours and caused minimal disruption."

Police are now investigating.
