BARNSLEY schoolchildren will be spending this afternoon sprucing up their local war memorial ahead of Armistice Day.

Kids from St Helen’s Primary Academy will be rolling up their sleeves together with local ward councillors and planting winter pansies around the Monk Bretton war memorial.

The planting, along with repairs to the back wall of the war memorial gardens, have been funded by the council’s Monk Bretton Ward Alliance.

The alliance brings together local ward councillors and community representatives to address local issues in the area.

Councillor Steve Green, on behalf of the alliance, said: "It’s an honour to associated with this wonderful achievement by the local community and school children."
