A BARNSLEY school has been labelled as 'outstanding' by Ofsted.

Birkwood Primary School in Cudworth received praise in leadership, pupils' behaviour, safety, teaching quality and pupils' achievement from the education watchdog.

In his report, Ofsted lead inspector Alan Lemon said 'something special and something of excellence takes place at Birkwood’.

Headteacher Julie Allen said: "This outstanding Ofsted report is a real celebration for our community of children, staff, governors and parents of what happens each and every day."

Barnsley East MP Michael Dugher added: "I'm delighted that Birkwood Primary has received the recognition it deserves.

"It's an outstanding school and Julie Allen is an exceptional headteacher. I believe governors, staff, pupils and parents should be all congratulated on their hard work and dedication."
