PLANNING permission for up to 325 new homes has been granted by the council.

The former North Gawber Colliery site in Mapplewell, between Spark Lane and Carr Green Lane, formerly had planning permission for 420 houses.

Barnsley Council turned this down four years ago but it was overturned on appeal. The latest plan includes about ten per cent affordable housing.

Councillors said they should push for more like 25 per cent, but chairman of the planning committee Doug Birkinshaw warned that this risked another appeal.

The proposed application, by Harworth Estates, includes the developer contributing £150,000 towards the education department to increase capacity at Mapplewell Primary, £120,000 towards the enhancement of public open space, and £70,000 towards the widening of Swallow Hill Road.

Coun Phil Davies said: "We seem to be being led by the nose by the developers. We seem to have lost the plot."
