A PUBLICAN who won £5,000 in a community awards contest is using the prize money to fund local projects such as a parent and toddler morning.

Michael Davies of The Beggar and Gentleman, Hoyland, was voted Hull and Yorkshire winner in the Enterprise Inns Community Heroes Awards 2014.

The awards are an ongoing commitment from the pub company, which has earmarked more than £1 million over ten years for the project.

Michael said the money would be used to support local community projects such as a parent and toddler morning at the pub.

He has also taken over the local PubWatch scheme which has been expanded to include supermarkets, garages and off-licences.

It is estimated that alcohol-related incidents on licensed premises have been reduced by 55 per cent as a result.

Michael said: "The area needs a boost. Businesses are struggling and morale can be low. We need community funding to continue with our projects."

He now goes forward to the national final on October 22 against 17 other regional winners, where he stands to win £10,000.
