A LISTED building in Brierley is to be converted into homes with a new housing estate developed in the grounds.

Brierley Hall - the former council building - will be converted into three homes and 29 new houses will be developed on the land off Church Street. The grade two listed building has stood empty since the council closed the depot there a few years ago.

Mr J Saul was given permission this week for the development which, originally, was thought to include a new community centre to be managed by Brierley Town Council.

A planning spokesman said: "Officers have met with the Town Council following the changed financial climate...which has meant that the provision of a new on site community centre building would no longer be the preferred option due to the lack of funding prospects to fund the future on-going maintenance of the building."

Instead the developer will pay £100,000 to pay for new community facilities in the area and £20,000 towards improving public open spaces nearby.
