SOLAR flares have been blamed for hundreds of people experiencing power surges in their homes last night, after a warning was issued by NASA.

The American space experts have released a statement saying that there are two major solar flares heading for earth - the first hit yesterday and the other is expected today. It says they are so powerful that it could have resulted in a geomagnetic storm, and has warned that further disruption to high frequency radio communication, global positioning systems (GPS), and power grids could be on the way.

Last night, hundreds of WABers on Facebook from across the borough reported problems with power with lights flickering well into the night - and with no explanation as to why.

Nasa said the two bursts of solar wind heading to Earth were travelling at 1,300 miles per second and 1,100 miles per second.
