THE country's first 'social supermarket' has won a national award for the work it has done in Barnsley.
Community Shop, which is run by Company Shop in Goldthorpe, won the 'community partner' accolade at the Food and Drink Federation Awards in London.
Community Shop is a social enterprise that redistributes surplus food from the supply chain and makes it available at heavily discounted prices to those living in areas of deprivation.
Working with many big-name retailers including Asda, Morrisons and Marks and Spencer, the scheme - which drew in the nation's media on its December opening - has proved a massive success.
As well as the cut-price items, the store's members also benefit from access to its in-store 'community hub', which provides debt advice and employment training.
Mark Game, managing director of Company Shop, said: "We have been bowled over by the support received for Community Shop so far.
"Company Shop has always viewed surplus food as a valuable resource and our social supermarket model shows just how much of a positive social impact we are able to have - both on people's lives and on the industry as a whole."
