A LOCAL MP has backed plans to give a pay rise to Barnsley's lowest paid workers.

Michael Dugher has called for the minimum wage to be raised to £8.00 an hour by 2020 - giving a pay rise to 8 per cent of Barnsley’s lowest paid workers.

There are currently 5,400 people in Barnsley employed in a job paying the national minimum wage, the equivalent of eight per cent of the total jobs in the area.

The planned increase would increase a worker's wage by £60 a week and £3,000 a year.

"Too many people in Barnsley struggle to get by on low pay," Michael said. "Raising the national minimum wage would put an extra £3,000 a year in the pockets of 5,400 of Barnsley’s lowest paid workers."
