RESIDENTS have been left gobsmacked after the 'best GP in their area' was earmarked for closure.

Lakeside Surgery, based at the Goldthorpe Centre, will reach the end of its contract on November 8 and according to its website the contract will not be extended.

Patients have received letters about the proposed closure, which said Lakeside could either become a subsidiary of another practice or simply 'disperse' its current patients to other surgeries.

Richard Armstrong, head of public health and primary care for NHS England (North), said: "Our priority is to ensure that all registered patients at the surgery continue to have access to high quality primary care.

"The two options identified will make sure that no patient will be left without access to a GP and NHS England is committed to working closely with the practice to agree the provision of suitable alternate arrangements for patients as soon as possible."

Patients are to be invited to give their views on future options. Click here for more information.
