STAFF are waiting to hear their fate after mobile phone giant Phones 4U collapsed into administration.

PwC has been appointed administrators to the company which has more than 700 shops with over 5,500 employees across the country.

Rob Hunt, joint administrator and PwC partner, said: "Our initial focus will be to quickly engage with parties who may be interested in acquiring all or part of the business.

"The stores will remain closed while we have these conversations."

The administrators said it is trying to access funds to pay wage arrears owed to employees.

In a statement released to the Guardian today, PwC revealed that it may have to start laying off workers from tomorrow.

Staff from the Barnsley store have been sharing an online petition in an attempt to get Vodaphone and EE to support Phones 4U.
