A YOUNG golfer from Barnsley is aiming to follow in Rory McIlroy's footsteps.

Mapplewell lad Matthew Lees, who has recently celebrated his 17th birthday, plays at Woolley Park Golf Club.

But come October he's off to the States to play on one of America's greatest courses - The Greenbrier in West Virginia.

To earn the prize Matthew followed up his title as Leeds and District Golf Union 2014 Junior Match Play champion with an impressive show at the Faldo Series qualifying event held at the Notts Golf Club in Hollinwell.

He carded two rounds of 72 par and a one over 73 to tie for the under-18 section of the competition and finished fourth.

After a sudden death play-off, Matthew won on the second hole to qualify for the prestigious 18th grand finals of the Faldo Series.

His proud mum and dad Elizabeth and John will be travelling with him for the week-long championship.

John said: "Matthew has been playing from the age of eight and was beating me by the time he was 12.

"He now plays off scratch and I can't get anywhere near him.

"I'm think I'm more excited than he is about the trip to be honest as Nick Faldo has always been a hero of mine."
