ALMOST £3 million is being spent on additional health services and staff at Barnsley Hospital - to allow patients access to services at weekends.

The hospital has been awarded the money from Barnsley Clinical Commissioning Group with the aim of offering a seven-day service.

Dr Nick Balac, chairman of the CCG, said: "People expect to be able to get the same services on a weekend as any other day, so why should it be any different for health services?

"We want to be leading the way in delivering seven-day services and the additional funding will help to achieve this."

More senior consultant reviews, additional diagnostics such as x-rays and staff which traditionally have been less supported on a weekend will now be brought in.

The annual contract covers all the hospital services including adult critical care, cancer, cardiac rehabilitation, children’s services, stroke, maternity services and urgent and emergency care.
