THE Reds avenged their midweek cup defeat by beating Crewe 2-1 in the league on Saturday.
Barnsley travelled to their cup foes' home after going down 2-0 on Tuesday evening, but second-half goals from Leroy Lita and Martin Cranie cancelled out Billy Waters' 22nd-minute volley.
Reds boss Danny Wilson made two changes to the side that exited the Capital One Cup, as Joe Dudgeon returned alongside Luke Berry at the expense of Reuben Noble-Lazarus and James Bree.
It was also a proud afternoon for the club's academy as three home-grown youngsters sprang from the bench to help their side to victory - including a senior debut for Rhys Oates.
"You've got to tip your hat to our lads," Wilson said. "They're not firing on all cylinders yet and I think we've got a long way to go before we get anywhere near that.
"I thought as a back four we were fantastic today - we looked solid and were strong."
In other news, Barnsley will play York City in the opening round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at Oakwell in the week commencing September 1.
