A GOAL in each half sent Barnsley crashing out of the Capital One Cup last night.
Having started brightly, the Reds looked dangerous in the early stages as Keith Treacy tested Crewe goalkeeper Ben Garratt after just 40 seconds.
Leroy Lita, making his first appearance for Barnsley, almost took advantage of a poor back-pass but again Garratt came to his team's rescue.
After further chances for Conor Hourihane and Sam Winnall, Billy Waters put the visitors ahead in the 32nd minute to give Crewe a 1-0 advantage at the break.
Frustratingly for the Reds, it was much of the same in the second half. Chances fell again to Winnall and Treacy, but it was Crewe who doubled their lead and sealed the win thanks to Matt Tootle's finish six minutes from time.
"We should have been home and hosed," said Danny Wilson. "You can't go through a game like that and not score.
"When you have that many chances, converting one can change the game. We'll get there."
The two sides meet again in League One on Saturday.
