OVER 70 dog owners from all over Barnsley had their pets microchipped for free at a recent event.

The event, held at the pavilion in Royston park, was organised by Barnsley Council and the Dogs Trust and ran for four hours on July 29.

From April 2016, all dogs will be required to have a microchip, which will allow for the easy identification of dogs and who owns them.

"It was excellent to see such a high turnout," said Coun Roy Miller, cabinet spokesperson for place. "It shows real commitment from responsible dog owners.

"It ensures they're compliant with the law in 2016 and, if they do lose their dog, they will hopefully be quickly reunited with it."
