MOTORISTS driving in and out of Barnsley town centre along Huddersfield Road face possible delays for the next few weeks.

A major gas mains upgrade started last week, with the four-week project seeing 350 metres of existing pipes being replaced.

To carry out the work safely, National Grid will undertake the work in two phases.

For the final phase of the project, Western Street will be closed at the junction of Huddersfield Road and Huddersfield Road will be closed from Victoria Road for traffic heading out of town.

Paul Martin, from the National Grid, said: "We are sorry for any disruption caused by this project.

"However, this is essential work that will help us to continue to provide a dependable gas supply to local homes and businesses well into the future."
