BARNSLEY'S fitness fanatics have been warned to be on their guard after a workout supplement on sale in a local gym was found to be illegal and dangerous.
Food standards officers at Barnsley Council have issued a warning to people who use pre-workout supplements which claimed to improve performance and burn fat.
A test on Muscle Junkie Psycho Pre-Work, which was on sale in one local gym, contained DMAA.
DMAA, a stimulant for which safe levels for human consumption have not been established, has been linked with high blood pressure, nausea, cerebral haemorrhage, strokes and even death.
The Muscle Junkie product has now been removed from sale all over the country.
Food standards field officer Sarah Tudor said: "We want to ensure anyone who may have a large stockpile of this supplement does not take it."
