EXPERIENCE Barnsley is celebrating after making it down to the last six in Britain's biggest museum awards.

Over 800 grandparents, aunties, uncles, parents and children have submitted their favourite site to visit in this year's Telegraph’s Family Friendly Museum Awards.

The shortlisted museums were trimmed down to a 20-strong list in June, before the final six museums were announced at the end of July.

The Town Hall-based museum, which has already attracted over 140,000 visitors, opened just over 12 months ago.

"We’re thrilled that Experience Barnsley has been recognised," said Coun Roy Miller, cabinet spokesperson for place. "It a great place for families to visit again and again.

"We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has nominated the museum and to all our staff."
