A BARNSLEY MP has called on the government to ban wild animals in circuses.

Draft legislation to ban wild animals in circuses was introduced in 2013, but the government failed to include it in this year’s Queen's Speech.

Michael Dugher, MP for Barnsley East, said: "Travelling circuses are no place for wild animals. No circus could ever provide a suitable environment or meet the particular needs of wild animals such as elephants or lions.

"That’s why the government should stop dragging their feet and get on with introducing the necessary legislation to ban the use of wild animals in circuses."
