PEOPLE who want to discover how their families coped during World War One can now do so for free at the town's libraries.

Ancestry UK is one of the most widely used family history websites with over seven billion searchable names. It includes the census records for England, Wales and Scotland from 1841 to 1901, as well as a host of military records.

Staff at Barnsley libraries will be on hand to help people with their research into family history, if needed.

Coun Jenny Platts, cabinet spokesperson for communities, said: "I would encourage anyone who is researching their ancestry or is fascinated by the past, to make the most of the free resources available at Barnsley libraries."

August will mark a hundred years since the start of the First World War.
