LOCAL businesses are being urged to go green by switching to electric vehicles through a government-backed scheme.
Small and medium-sized enterprises could benefit from a grant of up to £10,500 for the flexible lease of a plug-in van or £7,500 for a car for up to 48 months, plus an additional grant of £500 towards the cost of installing a charging point.
The 'Inmotion!' scheme had a launch event outside Barnsley Town Hall on Monday, where demonstrations were held to show just how easy it is to go green.
Coun Roy Miller, cabinet spokesperson for place, said: "I welcome the launch of the scheme. Electric vehicles form part of the national push for low and zero emissions vehicles.
"Barnsley Council has a Nissan Leaf, which demonstrates our commitment to a greener environment."
Plug-in vehicles on offer as part of the scheme include the Leaf, Renault Zoe, Renault Twizy and the Renault Kangoo van which can all travel up to 80 miles.
