A MAJOR employer in Barnsley has gone into administration - meaning 134 jobs will be lost.

Galglass, which makes galvanised steel tanks from its base on Hough Lane, Wombwell, went into administration last Thursday.

Coun Margaret Morgan said the 35-year-old firm going into administration had come as a "huge shock".

"It was only a few months ago they bought two adjacent houses as they needed extra office space, which to me implied it was a growing firm," she added.

"I'm very sad to hear about this, as we need as many jobs as we can possibly have."

A spokesman for administrators Duff and Phelps said: "Unfortunately, 134 redundancies were made earlier this week.

"The 11 remaining employees are assisting the joint administrators to identify and realise the assets belonging to Galglass."
