OVER 5,000 people from Barnsley were admitted to hospital in 12 months due to alcohol dependence problems.
The latest figures for the borough from the Health and Social Care Information Centre for 2012/13 show 3,610 were men and 1,940 women.
The figures also revealed the number of prescription items dispensed for the treatment of alcohol dependence was 167,486.
HSCIC chairman Kingsley Manning said the figures highlighted the impact alcohol dependence has on the NHS and said the rise in prescribing alcohol dependence drugs was "striking".
