FIREFIGHTERS are set to continue their eight-day strike action over the weekend.

Members of the Fire Brigades Union have been striking every day since July 14 in protest at the government's proposals to raise the retirement age from 55 to 60.

As part of the proposed 2015 firefighter pension scheme, those who retire between 55 and 60 will receive significantly reduced pensions.

The union says the government's proposals are "unacceptable, unworkable, unrealistic and nothing short of a vicious attack".

The union has been in negotiations with the government for three years in an attempt to avoid the implementation of proposals that they say would see firefighters paying more, working longer and receiving less.

Matt Wrack, general secretary of the FBU, said: "We have tried every route available to us to make the government see sense over their attacks.

"Three years' worth of negotiations have come to nothing because the government is simply unwilling to compromise."
