ALDI'S new distribution centre in Goldthorpe will run in an environmentally friendly way when it opens next year.

The depot - on Commercial Road - will serve the retailer's stores throughout the north, as well as having low running costs.

A solar panel system of around 15,000 square metres will cover the buildings and will provide ample electricity for the year.

Coun May Noble is pleased the venture will be a green one and that the bulk of the expected 400 jobs will go to local people.

"It's always a good thing when energy is saved," she said.

"Training packages for local people are being prepared and we should know more next month."
