THE number of working people in Barnsley claiming housing benefit has risen by 42 per cent, according to new research.
Michael Dugher, Barnsley East MP, said the research from the House of Commons showed the real impact of the cost-of-living crisis.
He put the increase down to a failure to make work pay, tackle the crisis and build new homes.
"These shocking figures show this government has failed to get control of the welfare bill," he added. "It shows the impact that the cost-of-living crisis is having on people in Barnsley."
