A BARNSLEY businesswoman has been fined £750 and banned from the roads for three years - after nodding off behind the steering wheel of her car following a belated birthday party.

Tanya Asma Biltawi, 34, of New Street, had had next to no sleep after the party which went into the early hours, Barnsley Magistrates' Court was told.

Biltawi - who makes and sells women's fashion and accessories - decided she was fit to drive after taking a call from a friend, said Eric Bray, defending.

Mr Bray said Biltawi only went a couple of hundred yards at most before she pulled up.

He added: "No-one saw her driving. She was sat in the car, not had any sleep and temporarily nodded off.

"She visits customers and the inevitable driving ban is going to cost her dearly. She is thoroughly ashamed of herself."

Julie Grant, prosecuting, said another driver noticed Biltawi apparently slumped behind the steering wheel of her Audi before calling police.

Biltawi, who admitted drink driving, was ordered to pay £85 in costs and a £75 victim surcharge.
