A TANKERSLEY woman has an amazing collection of almost 50 flags - suitable for any occasion.

Judith Hopkinson, 61, has been collecting the flags ever since she and husband John moved in six years ago.

She said: "In Canada and America it's common to have a flagpole and I just thought one day 'I'll get one'. John thought I was mad."

The couple put up the flagpole at their housewarming party, complete with a cornet solo from John who is a musician. The pole has a flag fluttering from it every day and is a talking point in the village.

People try to guess what occasion some of Judith's more obscure flags are celebrating.

She has flags for Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Hallowe'en, peace, sunshine, Valentine's Day, and just about everything in between, including St Patrick's Day, a simple 'Welcome' flag for guests, The Plough (star constellation) and a World Cup flag.

"We have fun flags for the kids," said Judith. "One little lad asked me if I had a pirate flag so, of course, I had to get one with a skull and crossbones."
