A LOCAL company is to become the first in the country to offer apprenticeships in 3D surveying.

1st Horizon, which is based near Penistone, wants to recruit up to ten apprentices to help cope with increasing demand for its services.

The company, which was set up in 2006, specialises in 3-dimensional laser scanning of buildings and surveying for underground pipes and cables.

They can survey anything from sewage works and reservoirs to supermarkets and schools.

1st  Horizon was one of the first in the UK to invest in the 3D scanners and has recently invested £500,000 in new 3D equipment.

Most clients are in the UK, but the company has also worked on projects in Russia, Germany and Romania. It also helped Channel 4’s Time Team look for an Iron Age fort using a 3D scanner.

The apprenticeships will be run through Barnsley College.

Applicants must have a minimum of five good GCSEs and be IT literate. The training will be a mix of in-house, block release and online learning.
