VANDALS smeared dog excrement over the children's play equipment and picnic tables in Carlton Park.

Resident Charlie Goulding said the dog bins in the park were emptied and their contents spread over the swings, see-saws and picnic tables sometime after 9pm last Wednesday.

The vandalism was discovered the next morning.

Charlie, 76, of Ridgeway Crescent, Carlton, said: "I think it is absolutely disgusting.

"Apart from the fact that it is a danger to the public and children that use the park, a lot of hard work has been done by volunteers to get the park where it is now and it is only right that it should be respected."

The children's play area has been in place for some time, but the picnic tables were only installed in the last month.

Members of the Neighbourhood Pride scheme helped to clear up the mess by jet washing and disinfecting the area.

Police have increased patrols in the area in an attempt to prevent the offenders returning.
