THE grave of a Barnsley First World War hero will be restored after government funding was secured.

The news was announced by communities secretary Eric Pickles and will see £100,000 being spent to restore graves of those who were awarded the Victoria Cross.

Coun Tim Cheetham also confirmed the plan to change the name of Royston Civic Hall to the Albert Shepherd VC Centre is going ahead, with signs due to be changed within a few weeks.

Rifleman Albert Shepherd was awarded the Victoria Cross after throwing a grenade and charging at a German machine gun, capturing it in battle in France in 1917.

Coun Cheetham said: "There is a plaque on the war memorial in the church yard, but we felt we wanted to do something more, particularly as the centenary of the First World War approaches.

"We're looking to create an information board at the Civic too. It's one of those inspirational stories to be remembered."
