THE MiCard discount travel scheme for young people has been saved - but the cost of journeys is to increase.

Ruling cabinet members are expected to give the move to add 10p to its price approval on Wednesday, with it due to take effect on June 1.

MiCard currently allows those up to 18 to travel on buses for 30p, including weekends.

Its future was discussed by the Youth Council and members were given four options to consider, including getting rid of the scheme altogether.

The members consulted with other teenagers and 368 out of the 535 voted for the 10p increase.

The report says MiCard will continue to be available to young people up to the age of 18 who live in Barnsley, and the 40p fare applies to bus journeys within Barnsley as well between Barnsley and the rest of South Yorkshire.

For trips in South Yorkshire the usual concessionary child fare will apply, which has been agreed to stay at 70p in 2014/15.
