A BARNSLEY headteacher is tackling the Leeds Half Marathon next month to raise money for a stroke charity in memory of her mum.

Julie Allen, 54, from Crofton, is the head at Birkwood Primary School. She will be joined by her son, Dave Martin, 25, to complete the 13.1-mile run on May 11.

They were keen to raise money for the Stroke Association after Julie's mother and Dave's nan, Patricia Roberts, had a debilitating stroke in 2000 when she was just 60 years old, which affected her left-hand side. She sadly passed away in September 2013.

Julie said: "It was a very difficult time but the Stroke Association was a real support when my mum had her stroke. The support the charity gives survivors and their families is fantastic, and we want to help them be there for everyone affected by stroke.

"When it comes to the big day, I know we will have my mum in our minds, spurring us on."
