FIREFIGHTERS say the decision to get rid of Barnsley's second fire engine will put lives at risk.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said they had no option but to get rid of the vehicle, due a shortage of staff to crew all its fire engines.
Barnsley firefighter Adam Myers, 34, of Park Lane, Great Houghton, said: "If there's a fire in two different places, and there is only one fire engine, simple maths tells you it can't be everywhere at the same time.
"This could affect our safety as well as public safety - it heightens the risk for us."
He said response times would be greater, because cover would have to come from places such as Cudworth or possibly Dearne.
