MORE than £100,000 is being invested in a bid to reduce the amount of youngsters socialising on street corners and in parks.

Monk Bretton is to benefit from a three-year Lottery-funded project, and builds on successful street-based youth work schemes that have been delivered in the village since 2009.

It will be led by the Youth Association which has been commissioned to help young people learn new skills through healthy activities and develop employment prospects through local volunteering.

The association aims to work with about 600 young people across the length of the programme.

Sir Steve Houghton, leader of Barnsley Council, welcomed the £106,162 investment, which will see projects starting this month.

He said: "The Youth Association has worked in Monk Bretton over a number of years and has had a number of hugely successful projects which we hope can continue in future."
