ILLEGAL gypsy and traveller encampments will now be given just eight hours to leave before police are brought in to remove them.

Plans for faster action to remove encampments at Penny Pie Park and on the playing fields at Keresforth/Broadway have been approved by Barnsley Council.

Whereas welfare checks and meetings between the police and the council had to be carried out before, it is hoped the tougher measures will stop illegal encampments.

However, immediate action can now be taken as the two areas have been designated as 'special sites' by the council.
