THREE would-be burglars caught red-handed in Barnsley were arrested, charged and sent to prison within just 30 hours.

The case is thought to be one of the fastest ever turned around by the criminal justice system in the county's history.

Michael Brearley, 27, of South View, Darfield, Gary McManus, 34, of Bridge Street, Barnsley, and Matthew Batley, 31, of no fixed address, were spotted by a member of the public breaking into a shop in Barnsley town centre in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Having checked CCTV, the officers found the three men nearby, their hands full of stolen goods.

They were arrested, interviewed, and charged and by 10am the following day they were sentenced to six months in prison having pleaded guilty to burglary.

The stolen property was returned to the shopkeeper.
