BARNSLEY Fire Station could be moved over the road if plans for 163 houses on its site is given the green light.

The land is still under Barnsley Council's ownership but its sale was discussed in private by the ruling cabinet last Wednesday.

Building firm Taylor Wimpey says it intends to build a mixture of new homes to meet local need and, as part of its proposals, the fire station would be relocated from one side of Broadway to the other.

Alan Atkin, deputy chairman of the South Yorkshire Fire Authority, said: "It is something that has been talked about but it is not definite," he said.

"The fire station is showing its age and over the road it would have better access to the dual carriageway."
